Questions

Can Claude do my accounting?

Short answer

Yes, when Claude is connected to a proper double entry ledger. On its own, Claude can explain and sort figures but has nowhere to keep the books. With a ledger connector it can record entries, match bank lines, prepare VAT figures and show where you stand.

What can Claude do with accounting on its own?

Claude is a general AI. In a plain chat it can read a spreadsheet, explain a profit and loss account or sort a list of bank lines into categories. That is useful, but it is not bookkeeping. A chat has no ledger behind it. Nothing is stored as an entry, nothing has to balance, and next month the work starts again.

UK rules ask for more than that. Every company must keep adequate accounting records that show and explain its transactions and disclose its financial position with reasonable accuracy at any time (Companies Act 2006, section 386). HMRC expects a company to record money in and out, assets, debts and the documents behind them, and to keep them for 6 years (GOV.UK). Sole traders keep their records for at least 5 years after the 31 January deadline (GOV.UK).

How does Claude keep the books when it has a ledger?

Claude works with other systems through connectors. They are built on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems (modelcontextprotocol.io). Claude lists many of them in its connectors directory. When a connector belongs to an accounting ledger, Claude can do real work in it:

The ledger keeps the result. Claude does the work, and you can read every entry later.

Where does Octobooks fit?

Octobooks is one example of a ledger built for this. It is a double entry ledger for small companies and freelancers in the UK, Germany and Austria, run through your own AI. You connect it to Claude Cowork or claude.ai, and Claude gets tools for the cockpit, journal entries, reports, the VAT return preview, the month close checklist, bank work lists, invoices and receivables.

You set the switches. For each company you choose who releases a booking: you, your AI, two agents together, a rule you approved, or a stamp you type. Every entry goes in through a release and stays in the audit trail. Nothing is deleted. A change is a reversal plus a new entry. Finished pages, such as the cockpit or the VAT return, show beside the chat.

What stays with you?

Some steps sit outside the ledger. Octobooks does not move money, send email or file returns with HMRC. The VAT return goes to HMRC through software compatible with Making Tax Digital. The year end accounts and the Company Tax Return remain the directors' job, whether you prepare them yourself or use an accountant.
