Questions

Do I still need an accountant if AI keeps my books?

Short answer

No, not by law. UK directors may prepare and file their own accounts and Company Tax Return, and many still use an accountant for the year end. When AI keeps the books, the accountant works from clean, current records.

Can I do my own company accounts and tax return?

Yes. GOV.UK says you can get an accountant to prepare and file your Company Tax Return, or do it yourself (GOV.UK). The usual deadlines for a private company are:

One change matters this year. HMRC's free online service to file accounts and the Company Tax Return closed on 31 March 2026. From 1 April 2026, companies file with HMRC through commercial software, and still file annual accounts with Companies House (GOV.UK). Deadlines are on GOV.UK.

Why do many directors still use an accountant?

Keeping the books and finishing the year are different jobs. The year end involves judgment: how to treat a large purchase, which reliefs apply, how to take money out of the company, and how the accounts are presented. An accountant brings that judgment and takes questions off your desk. Sole traders face a similar choice for Self Assessment, and from 6 April 2026 some must also use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

An AI can help a lot with the books. Whether you also want an accountant depends on your business, your confidence and how complex your year is.

What changes when AI keeps the books?

The accountant's time shifts from tidying records to the work that needs a professional. Instead of a box of receipts, they get a ledger that is up to date, matched to the bank and backed by documents.

Octobooks is one example of that setup. Your AI keeps a double entry ledger with an audit trail, runs the month close and can produce the trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet. It can propose year end entries, such as accruals and depreciation, for you or your accountant to review. Octobooks does not file accounts or tax returns. That stays with you or your accountant.

Some directors use an accountant only for the year end and keep the books themselves with AI. Others ask for a short review each quarter. Either way, a ledger with an audit trail lets the accountant see what was booked, by whom and when, without asking for every receipt.
