Questions

Can ChatGPT do my bookkeeping?

Short answer

Partly. ChatGPT can explain figures and sort transactions in a chat, and it can work in a ledger once you connect one through MCP. The bookkeeping itself happens in the ledger, so the setup matters more than which AI you choose.

What can ChatGPT do with bookkeeping in a plain chat?

In a plain chat, ChatGPT works like any capable AI. It can read a bank export, suggest categories, explain VAT terms or draft an invoice text. What it cannot do in a chat is keep the books. There is no ledger, nothing has to balance and the result is not stored as records.

That matters because UK companies must keep records of money in and out, assets, debts and the documents behind them for 6 years (GOV.UK). VAT registered businesses must also keep VAT records and file returns with compatible software under Making Tax Digital (GOV.UK).

A chat is still a good place to learn. You can ask what a balance sheet shows, how the flat rate scheme works or why a figure looks odd. Just treat the answers as explanations, not as your records.

How can ChatGPT connect to a ledger?

ChatGPT supports the Model Context Protocol, the open standard that Claude and many other tools also use (modelcontextprotocol.io). OpenAI's documentation says custom MCP servers let you connect your ChatGPT workspace to external applications (OpenAI). If your accounting ledger offers an MCP server, ChatGPT can use its tools to read reports, record entries and prepare figures.

Once connected, the AI no longer works from a pasted export. It reads the live figures in your ledger, and the entries it records stay there with the rest of your books. Next month it picks up where it left off.

Does it matter whether I use ChatGPT or Claude?

Less than you might think. Because MCP is a shared standard, one ledger connector can serve several AI clients. The choice of AI is mostly about which assistant you like working with and which plan you already pay for.

The ledger is the part that decides whether the books are right. Look for double entry, an audit trail, corrections by reversal and the VAT rules for the countries you trade in.

Octobooks is an example. It is a double entry ledger for small companies and freelancers in the UK, Germany and Austria, run through your own AI. It works with Claude and any other AI client that speaks MCP, and the Octobooks website names ChatGPT among them.
