Questions

What does AI accounting cost?

Short answer

Two main bills: your AI plan and your ledger. Claude has a free plan and paid plans, and connectors are available on all of them. The ledger has its own price. For Octobooks, you start free with no card needed, and current plans are on the pricing page.

What do you pay for when AI keeps the books?

The cost has several parts. Count them all before you compare:

What does Octobooks cost?

Octobooks is a double entry ledger for small companies and freelancers in the UK, Germany and Austria, run through your own AI. You start free, with no card needed. Plans and prices are on the Octobooks pricing page.

You use your own AI with it, such as Claude, so the AI plan is a separate bill you may already pay. Octobooks prepares VAT figures but does not file, so count your filing software as well.

If you already pay for an AI plan for other work, the extra cost of AI bookkeeping may be mostly the ledger. If you do not, add the AI plan to the comparison as well.

Which costs are easy to miss?

How should I compare options?

Compare the full monthly cost of each setup: AI plan, ledger, filing software and accountant time. Then compare what you get for it. Ask whether the AI can record entries or only read them, who releases a booking, whether every entry stays in an audit trail and how the figures reach HMRC.

This page is general information. Prices change, so check each vendor's own page.

The cost of doing nothing counts too. Late VAT returns, missed receipts and messy records all cost money later, either in penalties or in an accountant's time to put them right. HMRC can fine a company £3,000 for not keeping accounting records (GOV.UK).
